Well hello there, sugar! Pull up a chair and let me pour you a glass of sweet tea, because we are about to talk about something that’ll make your rhinestones rattle just a little bit. Now, y’all know I love our beautiful Tennessee more than a butterfly loves a wildflower, but I’ll tell you what, sometimes, when the sun goes down behind those smoky blue mountains and the mist starts rolling off the Cumberland River, things get a little bit… mysterious.
I’ve always said that Tennessee is a land of stories. Most of ‘em are about music, big dreams, and home-cooked meals, but some of ‘em have been hanging around for a hundred years or more, just waiting for someone to listen. If you’re the kind of person who likes a little chill with your thrill, then honey, you have come to the right place. From the hallowed battlefields of Franklin to the neon lights of Nashville, our state is just plumb full of spirits who aren’t quite ready to take their final bow.
So, put on your walking shoes and maybe bring a friend to hold onto, because we’re going on a tour of the most haunted places in the Volunteer State. It’s going to be a hoot and a half, I promise!
Franklin: History with a Side of Hauntings
Now, if you want to get down to the real heart of Tennessee’s ghostly side, you simply have to visit Franklin. It is just the most charming little town you ever did see, with its brick sidewalks and precious boutiques, but it’s got a history that’s as deep as a well. During the Civil War, Franklin saw some of the toughest times imaginable, and honey, that kind of history leaves a mark.
If you’re looking for the gold standard of spooky, you’ve got to check out Franklin Walking Tours. They have a nightly "Grim and Ghostly Tour" that is just fascinating. You’ll spend about 90 minutes walking through the historic district, and I’ll tell you what, the storytellers there are better than a Sunday morning preacher! They take you past buildings that look perfectly normal by day but have some truly hair-raising tales to tell once the moon comes out.
One of the stops that always gives people the shivers is the Lotz House. It was right in the middle of the Battle of Franklin, and they say the spirits there are still looking for a bit of peace. Then there’s Carnton and the Carter House, where the echoes of the past are so loud you can almost hear the boots on the floorboards.
If you happen to visit in October, you are in for a real treat. They offer a "Haunted Tour of Cherry Manor," which is a gorgeous historic home that’s usually closed up tight. But for a few lucky souls, they open the doors for tarot readings and paranormal stories. And on October 25th, they do something called "Tombstone Tales" in the historic cemetery. They have folks in period costumes telling stories by lantern light, it’s like the history books just stood up and started talking to you!
Nashville: Music City’s Eternal Encore
You know I love Nashville, it’s the place where dreams come to sing! But honey, some of those singers never really left the stage. When you’re walking down Broadway and you hear that thumping bass and the neon is flickering, you might just be standing next to a ghost and not even know it.
If you’re looking for a fun night out, the Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours offers a "Nashville Ghosts: Hauntings of Music City Tour" that is just delightful. They start you off at Skull's Rainbow Room in Printer's Alley, which is a place with enough history to fill a library, and take you all around the downtown area.
Now, you can’t talk about Nashville hauntings without mentioning the Ryman Auditorium. It’s the Mother Church of Country Music, after all! They say Captain Thomas G. Ryman himself still keeps an eye on the place. Legend has it he doesn't much care for shows that get a little too rowdy, and he’s been known to make his presence felt if things aren’t up to his standards. Bless his heart, he just wants the best for his building!
And then there’s Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. It’s a Nashville staple, but it’s also said to be a favorite hangout for the spirits of Hank Williams Sr. and our sweet Patsy Cline. I like to think they’re just hovering in the back, enjoying a cold drink and listening to the new kids try to hit those high notes.
For those of you who like a little "spirit" with your spirits, there’s even a "Boos and Booze Haunted Pub Crawl." You can grab a cocktail and hear about the darker side of Nashville’s history. Chattanooga: Legends of the River
Moving on down the road to Chattanooga, we find a city that is just as beautiful as a picture postcard, but it’s got some deep, dark roots. Chattanooga is nestled right there by the Tennessee River, and the water has a way of holding onto memories.
Chattanooga Ghost Tours has won all sorts of awards, and for good reason! They take you on a walk through the downtown riverwalk area. Now, this area is full of tragic history and old Cherokee legends tied to Ross Landing. I’ve always found that the oldest stories are the ones that stick to your ribs the most.
The guides tell tales of the city’s early days that’ll make the hair on your arms stand up. There’s something about the way the fog sits on the river in Chattanooga that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Whether it’s spirits from the Trail of Tears or ghosts from the old riverboat days, Chattanooga has a spooky soul that’s just waiting to be explored.
For the Truly Brave: Haunted Mansions and Nightmares
Now, I know some of y’all aren’t just looking for a history lesson, you want a real, heart-pounding scare! Well, Tennessee has plenty of that, too. If you’re feeling brave enough to face a "money-back guarantee" on a haunting, you might want to visit the Beast House in Nashville. It’s located in a late 19th-century building with real-life paranormal activity. I’ll tell you what, I think I’ll stay out here in the sunshine, but you go right ahead!
Then there’s Nashville Nightmare over in Madison. It’s been ranked as one of the most terrifying haunted houses in the whole country. They have these huge, elaborate sets and actors who are so good they’ll have you screaming for your mama! It’s high-energy, high-impact fun for anyone who loves a good jump scare.
Making the Most of Your Spooky Adventure
If you’re planning a trip to see our haunted side in 2026, here are a few little tips from your friend Penny to make sure your trip is more "treat" than "trick":
- Book Early: These tours fill up faster than a porch swing on a summer evening, especially around Halloween. If you’re coming in October, make sure you get your tickets way in advance.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: Honey, these are walking tours! You don't want to be worrying about a pinched toe when you're supposed to be looking for apparitions. Leave the high heels at home and wear your favorite sneakers.
- Bring a Camera: You never know what might show up in a photo! People are always catching little "orbs" or strange shadows on these tours. Even if you don't see a ghost, you'll have some great pictures of our historic buildings.
- Keep an Open Mind: Whether you believe in ghosts or not, these tours are a wonderful way to learn about the history of Tennessee that you won't find in the textbooks.
